Last weekend saw the running of the Riponian Stages Rally, starting at Thirsk Auction Mart it used the local forest stages of Wass, Boltby etc.were there was still some snow in the stages. Ronnie Roughead co-driving for Robin Shuttleworthin a MK1 Ford Escort came home in 21st place, Joanna and Guy Whickham were in 33rd in the Impreza, Tony Thompson was 36th in his Chevette, Dave Thirlwell and Dean Grabham 38th in the Escort, unfortunately Paul and Dan May rolled the once immaculate MK1 Mexico causing a huge amount of damage after setting some really good times. Road rallying now and Darkie Lewis and Richard Holdsworth ventured to Lincolnshire to compete on the Bruce Robinson Rally, using the BMW318iS they were in 2nd overall at the petrol halt, but clutch problems saw them finish in 6th, still a respectable result away from home ground.

I enjoyed the coverage of the IRC counting Monte Carlo Rally last month, those little four wheel drive non turbo IRC cars are good to watch, Peugeot and Skoda are the main contenders normally but the new Fiesta took the win with their number one WRC pilot Mikko Hirvonen at the wheel. The first WRC round and one of my favourites the Swedish Rally took place last weekend, Peter Gibson and a few of his mates were spectating. Looking at it on television it appears that although ford won with Hirvonen that Loeb still has winning pace, Petter Solberg had a bad rally, as did Gronholm. It would be nice to see Solberg run competitively in his ex-works Citroens but realistically I am afraid Loeb will probably win the championship again, it would be great if the Ford team and the private team of Solberg prove me wrong. Without the Shaw running as a road rally last month and no sign of the Buglass this month we have only the Weardale next month and the Chris Pringle to keep us road rally fans entertained in the near future, I am hoping to be out in my Puma if a suitable navigator can be found, otherwise it will be marshalling again. Our own Border Counties Rally on 20th March is one not to be missed Kielder Forest stages and anything from snow and ice to the warm sunny day we
had last year, looking forward to it.

Mac.
